Generally we go out to the end of the Homer Spit to a great restaurant on the beach for lunch. This time however we went to a place called Two-Sisters a soup & sandwich shop. We got there at 2 in the afternoon and they were still very busy. The bread they use is made every day by at the shop, as a matter of fact they were making the dough out front for tomorrows bread while we were there. The soup is also made fresh everyday there were 2 kinds so I tried the curry soup and man.. was it good!!!  Never thought just a bowl of soup and a sandwich would be a full meal but I struggled eating the whole sandwich, next time I’ll just order a half sandwich to save room for there incredible desserts. Did I mention they make fresh pastries too. Two Sisters is apparently well known in the area for there pastry and I was disappointed that my stomach had no room for even a taste.      Heidemann.tv Exit Glacier how sad...  I was amazed at how much this glacier had melted since the last time we were here in 2005. We had been back to Alaska in 2007 but never made it to Exit Glacier so this time it was a priority on my list to see it again. It has retreated at least another 100 to 150 yards back up the mountain and it appears to be only half the width it was when we first saw it back in 2005. I used my video camera to zoom in at the top of the mountain and this time I saw a huge ice shelf at the top that must have been a couple of hundred feet thicker above the Exit Glacier. This gave me a great perspective at how large the Harding Ice Field really is compared to Exit Glacier, still it sadden me to think that in a few more years this Glacier may be totally gone. I know we all hear about global warming and see the pictures on TV of the shrinkage of the ice caps at the North & South poles and on Greenland. However the impact of that warming doesn’t really effect you till you are standing in front of something you have touched and gotten to know.    Plankton Culture I started growing my own plankton now following an on-line article I found on the Internet.  We were buying it from our local fish store, but we are trying to lower costs to maintain the aquarium where I can. If your interested in growing your own plankton you can see the article I followed here. I ordered two disks as the article recommended but so far I have only used one of the disks with a single container. I figured if it failed I would have another disk to try again. It took only two weeks for it to get dark enough to split into 2 containers, the picture below is just after the split. I haven’t tried the articles updated formula using Kent’s Essential Elements yet, if it crashes, I’ll modify my formula on the next attempt. I had to really hunt to find the fertilizer the article says to use but I finally found it after looking all over town at an Ace hardware store just a couple of blocks from home. I didn’t go there first cause its a small store and I figured the big box stores would have it. After 2-hours of looking at several stores I was headed home in frustration and since I was going past that small Ace hardware store I decided to make a quick stop and see if they had it. Sure enough it was the only liquid fertilizer they carried. I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out. Crash and burn or live long and prosper.   OUR FAMILY NEWS
